To start, both types of pump are sewage pumps and will effectively move sewage from your basement or below-grade installation up into your drain lines. A sewage pump simply moves the sewage as it is through pipes between 1.5” and 3” in diameter, though we recommend the larger end to prevent clogging.
By comparison, a grinder pump has blades that will chop any solids in the effluent to make it harder to clog and easier to move the sewage by making the solids smaller. It then pumps the slurry into your drain lines, using pipes typically under 2” in diameter, and sometimes as small as 1.25”.
